The Marble Restoration Process
Marble Cleaning
Before we start any restoration or polishing process, the first step is to clean the marble surfaces. Not all natural stones are the same, and different stones require different cleaning procedures. Our cleaning process ensures that no acidic cleaners are used that can contribute to etching and dulling the marble surface. Additional cleaners may be used to help remove stains and discoloration.
Marble Repair
Repairing chips, cracks and other damage to marble surfaces can be performed in many different ways. Special compounds and materials may be used to fix a crack, while others perform best on a chip or damaged corner. The experts at The Marble Restoration Company will determine the best approach to repairing the marble surface to restore its beauty and style.
Marble Honing
Marble floors and surfaces become dull over time when the stone erodes from dirt, sand, shoes and other contact. The honing process serves two purposes: repairing and preparing the surface for polish. Using abrasive diamond impregnated pads and stones attached to an oscillating tool, the honing process levels out the surface, removes scratches and etches, and leaves a smooth finish that is ready for the polishing phase.
Marble Polishing and Buffing
To restore the marble surface to its best condition, the polish process returns the luster and shine to the floor, countertop, or tile surface. Multiple passes of high-quality polishing compounds are applied to the marble surface and restore the shine. The buffing process is also known as crystallization, which helps give the marble a mirror-like shine and reflection. If a honed or satin finish is required, our final step will be to buff with honing powders to achieve the client’s desired finish.
Marble Sealing
To help protect the marble surface from oils and water damage, etching and general use, sealing the surface is always recommended. Our industrial strength sealants help ensure a quality finish to the marble surface for a long time to come. The sealant may be dry to the touch after application, but typically requires some time to cure and harden. We provide instructions following the sealing process so you know when the curing process has been completed and regular use of your marble surface can resume. We recommend a maintenance program for marble, which requires sealing on a regular basis.
